Ben and I went on a little weekend escape to Avignon on Saturday. It was a brief getaway, but it was so nice to get out of the city and spend the night in a nice hotel. The weather was beautiful too!

Avignon is one of the cutest small towns I’ve ever been to. There’s not a ton to do there, but I love just wandering the backstreets.

History lesson: in 1309, the pope was moved from Rome to Avignon for protection, and the Palais des Papes was constructed. This building is so gigantic, it’s impossible to photograph. This is like one-third of it.

Before the pope was moved to Avignon, the town was much smaller and had just one small church – you can see how small it is compared to the Palais des Papes!

On Sunday morning, Ben and I had a picnic on Ile de la Barthelasse, a little island across the river from Avignon, where we were joined by a group of pigeons.

Avignon is famous for the Pont Saint-Bénézet, which fell into disrepair after being partially destroyed in the 17th century. If you’ve ever taken a French class, you’ve probably heard the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”!

Is a photo still called a selfie if there’s another person in it? I don’t know, but either way, I’m terrible at taking photos of both of us.

Luckily, Ben hates getting photos taken, so this doesn’t come up too much. 🙂
Hope you had an awesome weekend!
xo!
